Euro Pallets vs Standard Sizes: What Shippers Must Know

A guide comparing the Euro Pallet (120x80cm) against UK Standard, US Standard, and industrial block pallets for road freight operations.

Pallets are the unsung heroes of global commerce. They are the universal unit of currency in a warehouse. Everything revolves around the wooden base your stock sits upon.

However, "universal" is a strong word.

If a factory in Detroit loads machinery onto an American pallet, a forklift driver in Berlin will struggle to unload it safely without completely destroying the trailer floor. Using the wrong pallet for a specific geographic trade lane causes cargo rejection, wasted space, and immense logistical friction.

Before exporting your next batch of freight, understand exactly which pallet size your chosen carrier—and final warehouse—expects.

The Euro Pallet (EUR-1 / EPAL)

The undisputed king of the European continent. Since the 1960s, the Euro pallet has defined European truck design.

Dimensions: 1200 x 800 mm

Weight: Approx. 25 kg

Safe Working Load (SWL): 1,500 kg

Design: 4-way entry.

Every standard curtain-sided 13.6-meter trailer on the European road network is mathematically engineered to perfectly accommodate the Euro pallet. A standard mega-trailer can hold exactly 33 Euro pallets parked in three rows of 11 laterally across the trailer.

Why it Matters

If you are moving groupage or LTL freight across Germany, Italy, Spain, or Poland, you must use a Euro pallet. Furthermore, the European Pallet Pool allows drivers to exchange empty Euro pallets 1-for-1 when delivering goods. This simple barter system keeps European supply chains flowing instantly without purchasing new wooden bases.

The UK Standard Pallet (GKN / Chep)

While the UK uses millions of Euro pallets for import/export with the mainland EU, domestic British supply chains overwhelmingly prefer the larger, squarer "Standard" or "GKN" pallet.

Dimensions: 1200 x 1000 mm

Weight: Approx. 30 kg

Safe Working Load (SWL): 2,000+ kg

Design: 4-way entry, solid block construction.

This pallet holds structurally more weight and provides roughly 25% more base area than a Euro. Because of its large size, a standard European trailer can only fit 26 UK Standard pallets (parked two abreast sideways).

Why it Matters

If a French supplier explicitly asks for a "Euro", but a British shipper accidentally loads a "UK Standard" (120x100), the French carrier's load plan is instantly ruined. A UK Standard pallet is physically too wide to fit three-abreast in a trailer. The trailer will depart with massive empty voids, and the shipper will be heavily penalized financially for utilizing an "oversized" slot.

The North American Pallet (GMA)

The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) standard pallet dominates US and Canadian logistics, moving almost all FMCG, retail, and pharmaceutical goods in North America.

Dimensions: 48 x 40 inches (1219 x 1016 mm)

Weight: Roughly 15-22 kg depending on wood quality

Safe Working Load (SWL): 1,270 kg

Design: 2-way entry stringer or 4-way block.

Notice the dimensions: \1219mm x 1016mm\.

If an American shipper loads an ISO shipping container with 48x40 GMA pallets and sends it to Rotterdam, the receiving European warehouse will immediately encounter problems.

Cross-Border Friction

European electric forklift jacks (hand trucks) are specifically built with narrow fork-prongs spacing perfectly tailored for the 800mm and 1000mm slots on a Euro or UK pallet.

The massive stringer-style forks of a US pallet mean a typical European hand-pallet jack often cannot even slide underneath an American load without getting wedged onto the bottom boards. The cargo must frequently be physically pushed off the American pallet and re-stacked onto local Euro pallets before it can enter an automated European warehouse facility.

Half & Quarter Pallets

Finally, consider retail display logistics.

Major supermarkets do not want staff unpacking brown cardboard boxes onto shelves. Instead, FMCG companies use "Display Pallets."

  • Düsseldorf Pallet (Half Euro): 800 x 600 mm (metal & wood frame)
  • Quarter Pallet: 600 x 400 mm

These fractional sizes mathematically divide into a full Euro pallet footprint, allowing a carrier to clip four quarter-pallets onto one Master Euro pallet for rigid linehaul transport, then split them instantly at the destination supermarket.

Conclusion

A pallet is more than wood and nails—it is a geometric system defining the global supply chain.

  • Shipping domestically within Europe? Use 1200 x 800 Euro.
  • Shipping bulky goods domestically in the UK? Use 1200 x 1000 Standard.
  • Exporting from Europe to the USA? Consider sending goods floor-loaded and palletizing in America, or purchase export-grade 48x40 pallets specifically for the shipping container.
