Euro Pallets vs Standard Sizes: What Shippers Must Know

Pallets are the unsung heroes of global commerce. They are the universal unit of currency in a warehouse. Everything revolves around the wooden base your stock sits upon.
However, "universal" is a strong word.
If a factory in Detroit loads machinery onto an American pallet, a forklift driver in Berlin will struggle to unload it safely without completely destroying the trailer floor. Using the wrong pallet for a specific geographic trade lane causes cargo rejection, wasted space, and immense logistical friction.

The Euro Pallet (EUR-1 / EPAL)
The undisputed king of the European continent. Since the 1960s, the Euro pallet has defined European truck design.

Why it Matters
If a French supplier explicitly asks for a "Euro", but a British shipper accidentally loads a "UK Standard" (120x100), the French carrier's load plan is instantly ruined. A UK Standard pallet is physically too wide to fit three-abreast in a trailer. The trailer will depart with massive empty voids, and the shipper will be heavily penalized financially for utilizing an "oversized" slot.
The North American Pallet (GMA)
The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) standard pallet dominates US and Canadian logistics, moving almost all FMCG, retail, and pharmaceutical goods in North America.

If an American shipper loads an ISO shipping container with 48x40 GMA pallets and sends it to Rotterdam, the receiving European warehouse will immediately encounter problems.
Cross-Border Friction
