T2L Transit Documents
Understanding transit documents for road freight from Spain to Great Britain and Switzerland.
What are Transit Documents?
Transit documents are customs paperwork that accompanies goods moving between countries with different customs territories. When shipping from Spain (EU) to Great Britain (post-Brexit) or Switzerland (non-EU), transit documents prove the status and destination of the goods to customs authorities along the route.
Document Types
T1 — External Transit
Used for non-EU goods or EU goods being exported to a non-EU country. The T1 document places goods under customs supervision from the point of departure to the customs office of destination. Required for all Spain → GB shipments and Spain → CH shipments where goods will be consumed in Switzerland.
When: All exports from Spain to GB. All exports to CH where goods enter Swiss consumption.
T2L — Proof of EU Status
The T2L document proves that goods have EU customs status (are in free circulation within the EU). This is relevant when goods transit through a non-EU territory (e.g., Switzerland) before re-entering the EU. The T2L allows goods to re-enter the EU without paying customs duties again.
When: Goods transiting through Switzerland to reach another EU country (e.g., Spain → Switzerland → Italy/Austria).
T2 — Internal Transit
The T2 document is used for EU goods transiting through EFTA countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) under the Common Transit Convention. Similar to T2L but used within the NCTS (New Computerised Transit System) electronic system.
When: EU goods in transit through Switzerland within the NCTS system.
How Trans-road Handles Transit Documents
Document preparation
Trans-road prepares the Spanish export and transit documents; final import clearance is filed by the importer's appointed customs agent at the destination.
Electronic submission via NCTS
All transit declarations are submitted electronically through the New Computerised Transit System (NCTS). This ensures real-time tracking and faster processing at border crossings.
Guarantee management
Transit documents require a financial guarantee to cover potential customs duties. Trans-road maintains comprehensive transit guarantees, so you don't need to arrange your own.
Discharge at destination
The transit document must be discharged at the customs office of destination. We coordinate with the receiving customs agent to ensure timely closure and avoid guarantee complications.
Key Points for Shippers
Trans-road handles all transit document preparation and submission — you don't need to arrange T1, T2, or T2L documents yourself.
Transit guarantees are included in our service. No separate guarantee deposit is required from the shipper.
Electronic NCTS submission means faster border processing and real-time visibility of your shipment's customs status.
For Spain → GB shipments, T1 transit is standard. For Spain → CH, the document type depends on whether goods stay in Switzerland or continue to the EU.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to arrange transit documents myself?
No. Trans-road prepares and submits all required transit documents (T1, T2, T2L) as part of our customs-managed service. We determine the correct document type based on your shipment details and destination.
What is the difference between T1 and T2L?
T1 (External Transit) is for goods leaving the EU customs territory — used for all Spain to GB exports. T2L (Proof of EU Status) proves goods are in EU free circulation and is used when EU goods transit through non-EU territory (like Switzerland) before re-entering the EU.
Do transit documents add to the cost of my shipment?
Transit document preparation is included in Trans-road's customs-managed service. The main cost factor is the transit guarantee, which Trans-road provides through our own guarantee facility — no separate deposit is needed from you.
What happens if a transit document is not discharged on time?
If a transit document isn't discharged at the destination customs office within the specified timeframe, the guarantee holder (Trans-road) may be liable for customs duties. We coordinate proactively with destination agents to ensure timely discharge.
