Indicative spot and contract road freight rates per loading meter (LDM) and per kilometre across 15 European countries. Based on Transroad's active tariff data, cross-referenced with IRU quarterly benchmarks and Upply market indices for the 2025 reporting period.
European road freight rates in 2025 followed a clear pattern: a soft Q1 driven by post-holiday demand contraction, a recovery through Q2–Q3 as cross-border trade volumes normalised, and a modest uplift in Q4 ahead of peak-season inventory builds. Overall, the full-year spot index ended approximately 8–10 points above the Q1 2024 baseline — a moderate improvement after two years of rate compression.
Spain outperformed the European average significantly. Domestic spot rates from Spain rose 14.4% year-on-year by Q2 2025, driven by strong export demand in automotive, fresh produce, and industrial goods. Cross-border lanes ex-Spain — particularly to Germany, France, and Italy — benefited from Spain's growing role as a manufacturing and logistics hub within the EU.
Fuel costs moderated through mid-2025, with diesel averaging €1.55/litre in Spain and €1.77/litre in Germany (August 2025). Toll increases varied significantly: Slovakia imposed a +41% toll hike, while Italy saw only +1.8% year-on-year. These asymmetric cost pressures pushed divergence in per-km rates between short-haul Iberian corridors and longer Eastern European lanes.
Base index = Q1 2024 (100 points). Reflects LTL spot market, 4 LDM reference shipment, standard service.

The rate ranges in this benchmark are derived from three primary inputs:
1. Transroad active tariff database. Live pricing data from Transroad's own freight rate engine, reflecting contractual and spot-market rates charged to customers shipping from Spain throughout 2025. The reference shipment used for normalisation is a 4 LDM, 7-tonne non-hazardous load with standard collection and delivery.
2. IRU European Road Freight Rate Benchmark. The International Road Transport Union (IRU) publishes quarterly spot and contract rate indices for intra-European road freight. Their Q2 and Q4 2025 benchmarks were used to calibrate directional trends and cross-border lane spreads.
3. Upply / Transport Intelligence corridor data. Upply's market-insights platform and TI's European Road Freight reports were referenced for country-level rate relativities and seasonal adjustment factors.
Rates are expressed as full-year 2025 observed ranges (minimum to maximum across all quarters). Values are in EUR and exclude VAT. Fuel surcharges and toll supplements are listed separately in the Surcharges table above.
The average road freight spot rate in Europe in 2025 ranges from €1.10 to €1.90 per km for full truckloads (FTL), depending on the corridor, direction, and seasonality. For LTL shipments priced per LDM, rates typically range from €80 to €290 per loading meter depending on origin, destination, and service level.
Road freight rates from Spain to Germany in 2025 range from approximately €140 to €195 per LDM for standard LTL service, or €1,800 to €2,600 per FTL load. The Spain–Germany corridor (approx. 1,700–2,100 km) typically has 3–4 day transit times.
European road freight rates fell in Q1 2025 due to subdued demand and overcapacity, then stabilised in Q2–Q3 as demand recovered. Contract rates rose modestly in Q4 2025 (+2–3%) while spot rates remained broadly flat. Spain outperformed other markets with domestic spot rates up 14.4% year-on-year by Q2 2025.
