How to Calculate Pallet Freight — Step by Step
Convert pallets to LDM
Multiply pallet length (m) × pallet width (m) ÷ 2.4. One EUR pallet = 1.2 × 0.8 ÷ 2.4 = 0.4 LDM. For non-standard cargo, use: length × width × quantity ÷ 2.4 ÷ stack factor.
Apply the rate per LDM
Multiply total LDM by the rate per LDM for your destination. Barcelona → Germany: 2.0 LDM × €165/LDM = €330.
Check the weight limit
Verify total shipment weight does not exceed the LDM weight allowance (~1,750 kg/LDM for standard cargo) or 24,000 kg total payload. Weight surcharges apply above these limits.
Consider stackability
Stackable pallets allow double-decking, which can reduce LDM by up to 50%. Indicate if your goods are stackable to get lower rates on compatible corridors.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to ship a pallet from Spain to Germany?
Shipping one EUR pallet (120×80 cm, 0.4 LDM) from Spain to Germany costs approximately €56–€78 at standard LTL groupage rates of €140–€195 per LDM. Transit is 3–4 days. Weight up to 750 kg per EUR pallet is included.
How many pallets fit on a standard European truck?
A standard 13.6 m curtainsider trailer can hold 33 EUR pallets (120×80 cm) in a single-deck configuration, or up to 66 EUR pallets if the goods can be double-stacked. In LDM terms, 13.6 LDM = approximately 33 EUR pallets. The payload limit is typically 24,000 kg.
What is the difference between LDM and pallet rates?
LDM (Loading Meter) is the unit of trailer floor space occupied by your cargo. One EUR pallet (120×80 cm) = 0.4 LDM; one industrial pallet (120×100 cm) = 0.5 LDM. Freight rates are typically quoted per LDM for LTL shipments because it measures the trailer space consumed, regardless of the number of pallets.
Is pallet freight the same as LTL freight?
Yes — pallet freight in European road transport is typically LTL (Less than Truckload) or groupage freight. You pay only for the loading meters your pallets occupy in a shared trailer. For 1–3 pallets, expect to pay for 0.4–1.5 LDM; for 10–15 pallets, around 4–7 LDM.
