LTL Groupage
FTL (Full Truck)
LTL (Less than Truckload) or groupage freight means your cargo shares a trailer with other shippers. You pay only for the loading meters (LDM) your goods occupy in the trailer. This makes it cost-effective for shipments of 1-20 pallets that do not fill an entire truck.
LTL groupage is typically the cheapest road freight option for shipments up to 10-13 LDM. From Spain, economy groupage rates start from approximately 80 EUR/LDM to nearby countries (Portugal, France) and 90-140 EUR/LDM to Central and Eastern Europe. For full trucks, FTL becomes more cost-effective above 8-10 LDM.
LTL freight is priced per loading meter (LDM). The formula is: (cargo length in meters x cargo width in meters x number of units) divided by 2.4. One EUR pallet (120x80 cm) = 0.4 LDM. A 10-pallet shipment = 4.0 LDM. Multiply LDM by the rate per LDM for your destination.
Transit times for LTL groupage from Spain: France 2-3 days, Germany/Italy 3-4 days, Poland/UK 4-6 days, Romania/Bulgaria 5-8 days. Economy (slower consolidation) adds 1-2 days. Express groupage reduces transit by 1-2 days at a higher rate.
